Environmental Responsibility
River Hill Coal Company is a company committed to the environment and it continuously strives to improve on the effectiveness of its environmental efforts. After abandoned mines are re-mined, River Hill Coal Company restores the land to its original habitat and contour. Vegetation and wildlife, such as elk and trout ,are reintroduced into the surrounding landscape.
Committed to renewable resources, River Hill also incorporates biofuels and solar power. In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, the company is investigating how to reduce carbon dioxide production for the eventual prevention of emissions in the future.
Along with complying with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, permits and agreements, River Hill actively participates with Pennsylvania lawmakers to develop and implement new proactive environmental laws and regulations.
• Reintroduction of Plants/Wildlife
• Remining Abandoned Mines
• Environmental Legislation
• Land Restoration
• Biofuels
• Solar Power
Pennsylvania bears much of coal’s negative legacy: old mines that must be reclaimed and piles of “waste” coal that leech poisons into the groundwater with every rain. The state now spends up to $75,000 per acre to rehabilitate abandoned mines. Rather than have taxpayers’ money go to waste, River Hill re-mines these areas, produces high quality coal from the seams that were left behind, and then reclaims the area at company cost. What has been the result of River Hill’s efforts?
• Job creation
• Reintroduction of forest and wildlife where life could not exist
• Metallurgical coal production for use in the steel production of the United States
• Power generation
In addition, we continually strive to improve the effectiveness of environmental management efforts and commit necessary resources to comply with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, permits and agreements. We actively participate with Pennsylvania lawmakers to develop and implement environmental laws and regulations. We are also investigating how we can reduce carbon dioxide production short-term for the eventual prevention of emissions and releases in the future.
